‘Devotion and Design: The John Cyril Hawes Story’
‘Devotion and Design: The John Cyril Hawes Story’ is a permanent exhibition in the newly constructed Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre, part of the larger St Francis Xavier Cathedral Precinct Project. The exhibition illustrates the life of John Hawes, a beloved priest and architect who designed and constructed many ecclesiastical and other buildings throughout Western Australia’s mid-west.
Hawes’ own words were the inspiration for the exhibition’s design direction. Quotes and stories were taken from his own comprehensive and detailed diary entries and drawings, allowing Monsignor Hawes’ story to be told in his own words.
The design of the exhibition structure emerged from the shape of the cross, taking influence from the traditional design of religious architecture. The exhibition features many of Hawes’ personal objects and his extensive collection of drawings, which are displayed and regularly changed out for a refreshed visitor experience.
Following its successful opening, the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre was named the winner of the Interpretation Project category in the 2017 WA Heritage Awards.
